Tarot Card Puller
Nine of Swords

Nine of Swords

Number 9 Air

A swords card: thought, truth, and what you keep turning over.

Upright

sleeplessnessanxietydreadthe three a.m. version

Sitting up in bed with your head in your hands. The Nine of Swords is anxiety and its favourite hour: the fear that is real, magnified by darkness and solitude into something that will look different at eight in the morning. The swords are on the wall behind. None of them are in her.

Reversed

the worst passingsaying it aloudperspective

The worst of the night is over. Reversed, this is anxiety spoken aloud and shrinking, perspective returning, or a dread that was disproportionate being seen as disproportionate. It does not mean the problem has gone. It means you can look at it now.

What is in the picture

A figure sitting up in bed, face in hands, nine swords on the wall behind. The quilt is embroidered with roses and zodiac signs. The room is ordinary.

What it says about…

The line a reading leads with, depending on what you said you were asking about.

A bit of everything

Upright: you are more frightened than the situation warrants, and the fear is still real.

Reversed: the worst of it is passing. Say it out loud to somebody.

Love and relationships

Upright: fears about this that have not been said to the person involved.

Reversed: saying it turns out to be survivable.

Work and direction

Upright: dread about work that is bigger than the work.

Reversed: the thing you were dreading turns out smaller.

Money and security

Upright: money anxiety at three in the morning. Look at the real figure in daylight.

Reversed: the number is bad and finite. Finite is workable.

Me, honestly

Upright: this is anxiety, not prophecy. They feel identical and they are not.

Reversed: you are coming out the other side of this.

A decision I am stuck on

Upright: not now. Nothing decided at this hour survives the morning.

Reversed: you can think about this properly now.

With other cards

With Four of Swords

Anxiety and the instruction for it, side by side. This pair is almost medical: you are not thinking straight because you have not slept.

If this card leads

Tell one person the actual sentence, in daylight.

As a yes or no

Upright, it reads as no. Reversed, maybe.

“This is fear, and fear is not information.”

Draw it in a reading

The meaning above, applied to something you are actually asking about.

Turned into a star sign, and only to check whether the cards landed in a familiar element.

Written back into the reading. Nothing reads it and decides what you need to hear.
